App Store optimization basics: five things that decide if people find your app

By the Marberx team · · 5 min read

App Store optimization, or ASO, means improving your listing so the right people can find your app and choose to install it. It has two jobs: being found in search, and persuading people once they see your page. These are the five parts to work on first.

1. The app name

The name is limited to 30 characters. It is the strongest signal for search, and it is the first thing people read. Use your real brand name, and add a short descriptive phrase only if it is accurate and reads naturally.

2. The subtitle

The subtitle, also 30 characters, sits under the name. Use it to say what the app does for the user in plain words. It also counts for search, so choose words people actually type.

3. The keyword field

The keyword field is hidden from users and limited to 100 characters, with keywords separated by commas. Do not repeat words that are already in your name or subtitle, since that wastes space. Do not use competitor brand names or misleading terms, because that breaks the App Store Review Guidelines and can get an update rejected.

4. Screenshots

Most people decide from the first two or three screenshots. Treat them as a short story: what the app does, why it is useful, and one proof point. Keep captions short and readable on a small screen, and show the real app.

5. Ratings and reviews

Ratings affect both visibility and trust. Ask for a rating at a happy moment, such as after the user completes something, not on first launch. Reply to reviews, especially the negative ones, and fix the issues people raise.

How to measure it

In App Store Connect, watch the path from impressions to product page views to downloads. If impressions are low, work on name, subtitle and keywords. If page views are high but downloads are low, work on screenshots, description and ratings. Change one thing at a time so you know what worked.

Be patient

Rankings move slowly and depend on competition, so no one can promise a result. Good ASO is steady, honest improvement. We teach the wider growth toolkit in the Digital Marketing course.
